We’ve all started to adjust to the recent 1-hour “Spring” ahead that we observe every year. For those early risers out there, this will bring the inevitable, “It’s too dark out to be heading into work.” We wanted to help by providing some inspiration with ideas that could really help you speed up your mornings while embracing some “Spring” cleaning. If you are interested in learning some of the best ways to organize your wardrobe, continue reading below.
Since you are still reading, the chances are good that you are not happy with your wardrobe and or how you’ve been keeping it organized. Below you will find some simple steps you can choose to follow to help get your Spring started in style by getting your closet in back in order.
If you find any of these tips helpful, we would really love to hear from you in the comments at the bottom of this article.
Before you get started, try putting on your favorite album or playlist to help make the time fly. It’s amazing how much the right songs can change your whole outlook.
Step 1: Take Everything Out
Have you ever stared at your closet and felt like you wanted to to scream because you had “nothing to wear!?” You’re not alone. The problem, obviously, isn’t that you have nothing to wear, it’s that you don’t have too many items that you enjoy wearing. Could that be true for you? If we are being honest with ourselves, there’s a good chance the answer is “yes.”
We said the steps would be simple, but we didn’t say they’d be easy. You are going to have to empty out your closet and setup 3 bins, boxes, or bags:
If you have items that you haven’t worn in the past year, they will either need to go into the donate or sell bin. A simple rule of thumb to follow is to ask yourself this question: “Would I buy this today?” Naturally, your answer will tell you in which bin this garment should go.
Exception: If you have an item that has sentimental value but you no longer wear -think maternity clothing or wedding dress- these can be kept.
Once you’ve separated your items, you need to take a look at your closet space and reevaluate how much space you actually have. Perhaps your closet wasn’t too small all these years, instead it was the number of items you’ve been stuffing into it.
Step 2: Alternate Those Shoes
You may choose to put your shoes back in your closet last if you’d like, but no matter when you do it, let’s change things up. Rather than placing them all facing the same direction try doing one of the following two variations:
- Take one shoe from every pair and reverse its direction
- Alternate the direction of every pair of shoes
Whichever method you choose, doing this will help you put more shoes into the same space due to the natural shape of your feet. Trust me. You’ll love this tip.
Step 3: Hang in There
One of the things we believe here at Lynne’s Fashion Boutique is that you often get what you pay for. Believe it or not, this applies to hangers as well.
If you haven’t been keeping up with the latest hanger “tech,” you’ll be pleased to know that you have several options. Before we look at some options below, keep this rule in mind. Just because some hangers are more affordable or on sale, this doesn’t mean they are your best option.
Quality hangers can last a lifetime. Pick a type that you like, and if necessary, purchase them when you can to complete your wardrobe collection. Which type do you like?
Besides just the type of hanger you choose, you might also want to consider doubling up on your rods. Take a look at the video below if you know someone handy (maybe that is you!). Hooks and towel racks make for efficient use of additional wall space too.
Step 4: Pick a System
Now that you are ready to put things back into your closet, you should pick a “system” for how you organize your closet. Only you can determine which way is the “best” way to organize your wardrobe. Consider organizing by:
- Season - Maybe you want your items in collections based on their seasonality.
- Occasion - Or perhaps you want your clothes grouped by things like “work” clothes or “casual,” or “party” clothes.
- Clothing Type (Most common) - This method works great for most people. This system will have you putting all of your blouses together, all of your slacks, and your dresses, each in their own group.
Don’t forget that with either “system” that you choose for organizing your wardrobe, you can easily select a sub-organization method. So let’s say you opt for the main method of clothing type. You can further organize your slacks by occasion, or by color, etc.
Step 5: Maintain
I can recall learning about entropy in science class. If your science is rusty, this idea fits well with closets. It essentially says that without the input of energy, systems will move from order to disorder. Why am I bringing back to science class now?
Consequently, your closet will need you to put some energy into it throughout the year, unless you enjoy these yearly cleanouts. If you do, more power to you! If you would prefer to expend small amounts of energy here and there, try this tip:
Get a bin, bag, or some other container and have it ready for the items that get “retired” throughout the upcoming year. It is far too easy to just tell yourself you’ll deal with it later. Having this bin will save you a lot of effort later.
I recently picked up an audiobook (so I can listen on my ride in) that you might find interesting. Perhaps you can find it at your local library or through the awesome Hoopla app. Check it out. It could be "life-changing":

Step 6: Reward Yourself
We’ve got good news and bad news. Because we like to end on a positive note, we will start with the bad (the glass is half full, right?). The bad news is that you have to turn off your music now because you’re done cleaning. So what’s the good news?
The good news is that it’s time to reward yourself. You worked hard to get your wardrobe and yourself back in order again. Everyone knows that if you reward behaviors, they will be repeated.
There are several ways you could reward yourself. Perhaps with a glass of wine, or a long hot shower. Our favorite reward suggestion is that you come visit us for something special to add to your wardrobe.
